Spec Check
  • 14.1-inch LCD screen
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor
  • 320 GB hard drive
  • 4 GB RAM (8 GB maximum)
  • Dual-layer Lightscribe DVD±R drive
  • Quad-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g)
  • Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics (up to 1759 MB total)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit, SP1)
  • Weighs 5.1 pounds

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With two computational execution cores in a single processor, it provides greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
  • Hard Drive: The large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

You'll enjoy enhanced hard drive protection with HP's Protectsmart, which includes a 3D accelerometer that safeguards your data by parking your hard drive if your notebook detects any range of motion, such as being knocked off your desk, falling or taking abuse.

The gorgeous and functional details of the DV4-1227US.
  • Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. This notebook has an amazing 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 14.1-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, which uses shared video memory (up to 1759 MB allocated from the system memory). This graphics card is built with Intel Clear Video technology, which delivers clearer, more detailed images by eliminating many of the jagged edges and video artifacts seen when viewing interlaced content and features powerful color control to ensure videos are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and it also includes SRS Premium Sound. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (with 1 eSATA + USB 2.0 combo port)
  • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
  • Analog video output: 1 VGA
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 2 headphone jacks
  • 1 microphone jack

HP WON'T HONOR THE WARRANTY ON THEIR PRODUCTS
If you get one that works without problems then consider yourself lucky!

The problems existed from the very first time I turned it on. I made 5-6 phone calls and sent the computer to HP for repairs 2 times. Each time it came back un-repaired and even had some scratches that were not there before. They had the audacity to ask me to send it to them again. Each time I sent it in I included a very detail explanation on how to reproduce the problem that occurred like clockwork within 15-20 minutes after turning the computer on with the power cord.

The phone tech support is useless. The people are always very nice. The bottom line is the person actually doing the repairs does whatever the (blank) they want to do. AND THEY DO NOT TEST THE COMPUTER BEFORE SENDING IT OUT!!!

Every time I buy something from HP other than a basic Laserjet printer (black ink only),I get burned.

I want to thank Amazon for honoring HP's warranty when they did not and giving me a refund less the taxes. It would be nice to get the taxes back too?

Avoid HP, they provide no service and don't honor warranties
Laptop was received with a broken ethernet port. HP would not service my laptop due to "customer related damage" which it was obviously not. There is a reason they are dead last in all customer service polls. God forbid if you need actually service. Between dealing with people in India, which most barely speak English, and zero warranty support, take your money elsewhere. HP is the worst service experience I have ever had.

dv4 pleged with idfx driver issues
Purchased 5/09 and immediately ran into igfx driver issues where screen goes blank for several seconds, then returns with an alert bubble "display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Was advised to upgrade ram, so paid Crucial $400 for 2-4GB chips - no change.

HP support has quite a few others with this issue. Unable to update driver from Intel site as this is an OEM modified driver, HP has nothing to offer. So far no options available to correct. May have to seek refund with 10 months left on warranty.

My advise, stay clear of Intel's Express Chipset Family, and Intel GMA4500MHD install by HP. I noticed they are extending the warranty for AMD chips, but not Intel ... funny that!

I will update when a solution is found OR whar happens with the refund.

Awesome..BUT..( there is always a "but" :P )
Got this laptop a few months back. i just loved it. The looks are awesome..its got a bronze tinge to it.looks great. the 4 GB of ram coupled with the dual core processor is just enough to do anything on this laptop. The graphics card however was the "no-so-satisfying" part of the laptop. it says 1918GB of shared memory but wont tell you how much is the dedicated memory. neither does the tech know about it. you cant play some high end games like need for speed-shift. Call of duty 4 only works well on low settings. now these games only need 512 MB of graphics memory and still dont work well with 1918MB which this laptop has. So i dont know where it falls short.
Apart from this graphics card thing..i think its an awesome laptop. totally worth the money. Bluray's work well, HD display is amazing, no problems whatsoever with the speed of applications. i dont knw why people complaint about the keyboard. works well for me! its only a problem at night with the lights off.

Do not buy an HP laptop
I bought 2 HP laptops and have had nothing but trouble. 1 laptop had to go back to the shop three times: once because the bracket connecting the screen to the keyboard broke, once because the hard drive was defective and once because the sound card was defective. One time I sent it to HP and they returned my computer still broken. My other laptop had to be returned to the factory because the hard drive was defective. I have had to do so many system restores (and in fact did one last night) and lost programs that I had to buy (Word Perfect). Even though it was supposed to have been repaired, my itunes library still doesn't play right. The music will skip. This computer is a huge disappointment. I don't even use the computer anymore because it is so annoying. Vista makes it even worse (although I think hp finally realized this.)

Great buy for the price
I bought this for my fiancee after she went overseas primarily for Skype video chat and because she like to watch things and play games from time to time. For the most part she is very happy with it and loves it. I played with it before I sent it to her. Updated it and installed items. For the most part the computer itself performs well. I would have given it 5 stars but Vista just rubs me the wrong way.

I was jealous that it came with bluray as I have a Toshiba Qosmio and bluray has yet to be included with that model. Oh well. She definitely has an advantage with this model. I'm an IT and I was already a fan of HP so to see her smile and be excited was enough for me to be pleased with another product that they released. Definitely a great bargain.

For those parents looking for something for their college kids and still give the great power and performance then this would definitely be a great investment. Primarily because its a name you can trust.

17" screen
plenty of memory

HP Pavilion dv1260us w/ 17" Screen
I have had my HP Pavilion dv1260us for 7 months now. At first, I was totally jazzed by the unit - a great 17" screen, which I love, along with many other great features. It was fast and worked great. But then, after 5 or 6 months of fairly heavy use, I began having problems.

Before I get into those, let me say that I took very good care of the laptop - using it only at home - not taking it anywhere or abusing it in any way. (Due to severe space constraints, I choose to use a laptop rather than a desktop computer.) Since I use an added wireless keyboard, I do not have an issue with the laptop's keyboard as expressed in other comments.

Without going into long, tedious details, the main problems consisted of the DVD player failing. I contacted HP tech support, which I personally think is very good - I got e-mail replies within a couple of hours and they continued to try to work with me. Bottom line, I never did get the DVD player to work, which in many ways makes the computer useless as you cannot play your movies or music on disk and you cannot download the software programs that come with new hardware items such as printers, etc.

The other major thing that started to happen was the computer just began shutting down for no apparent reason. I contacted HP tech support and tried many interventions without fixing the problem. The most recent thing (disaster!) which happened was all of a sudden I got a blue screen with the dreaded message: "Fatal System Failure." I have no formal training with computers; however, I have used them for years and have sort of learned along the way. So, I tried everything that I could think of and finally got the laptop to boot up. Everything looked okay, except as I checked things out further, I discovered that I had lost all of my files! I was so grateful that just 3 weeks before I had subscribed to a back-up service which daily scans and stores the contents of your computer, so I was able to successfully restore everything. (By the way, I highly recommend getting a reputable back-up service. It can prevent disaster!)

So, now everything is restored (at least for the moment) and I haven't had a shut-down in a while, but the DVD unit still does not work. Plus, I have "lost faith" in the computer. With the kind of work that I do, which includes being a webmaster, I MUST have a reliable machine that I can trust.

Rather than return the computer and go thru whatever delays that may entail, I have decided to try a different brand. I had poor luck with my last HP Pavilion, so I am ready for a brand change. The other computer also had problems with the DVD unit. In my opinion, HP does not produce the high-quality computers that they used to a while back.

My very first computer many years ago was an Acer, which I had good luck with, so I have decided to go back and give that brand a re-try. I will return this HP unit for whatever repair or replacement HP may give, but I will not use it as my primary computer.

I hope this review has been useful. I think many times a review is done before the "honeymoon" for a given product is over and in my opinion many of those early reviews are skewed towards the positive. Since I have had this computer for over 6 months, I do think this review might be a bit more accurate than those done after just a few weeks or less of product use. Wishing you the best of luck with your computer search!

The notebook I always wanted!
This notebook is amazing. It's worth every single cent! I work with video and photo editing and I have to deal with HD files sometimes, and this computer is always perfect for the job. I have it for 3 months now and never had ANY problems with it. It didn't even froze once! Before buying it I read some bad reviews about the keyboard, but I love that keyboard! Not sure if they changed it or if that's the old one they were talking about, but there's no problems with it at all! I still can't believe I paid this price on such an amazing item like this. It was a bargain!

  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor
  • 320 GB hard drive
  • 4 GB RAM (8 GB maximum)
  • Dual-layer Lightscribe DVD±R drive
  • Draft-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth
  • Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics (up to 1759 MB total)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit, SP1)
  • Weighs 6.34 pounds

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard (with integrated numeric keypad) and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 16-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--a perfect 16:9 aspect ratio for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen.

Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). With the integrated Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones.

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. It comes with the following external connectors:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (with 1 eSATA + USB 2.0 combo port)

Nice laptop with good features
I picked this laptop mainly because Amazon did such a wonderful job posting it on their site. It was so detailed and informative, even more so than HP's website. I've been very happy with all of the ports that this computer has. I like the HDMI port. I've used my Netflix online to watch a movie and plug it in to my flat screen LCD. The picture was a little glitchy which might be from my ISP. Not really impressed with Comcast. The wireless range on this computer is fantastic. The screen is very glossy which gives great sharp clear resolution but at times can give a lot of glare also. Programs on this computer are pretty fast to pull up. It does a good job at running 2 programs at once. My Itunes on my old computer would take over 2 minutes to pull up, this one does it in 6 seconds and it's ready to run. I'm not a "Tech savy" person so take my review with caution. I use my computer for entertainment, internet, and I use it for keeping records and schedules for work. (construction). Everything that I want it to do it does. The only gripe that I have about it is that it is much slower when on battery power. I changed it's power settings but that didn't seem to help. It just made the screen brighter. My advice is try a display model before you buy. That way you know how it feels, looks, and functions. I tried this computer out at my local [...] and then ordered it threw Amazon. Yes, Amazon was cheaper than even [...]. Thank's again Amazon for your wonderful service, products, and great shipping.

A very good Laptop ... Vista slows it down a little
A very good balance between size, price, computing power, storage capacity, and cost. Still needed to turn off some Vista features to get it faster. Also, battery doesn't last that long.

MY
A decent laptop for the price.
I bought it for my mom about 2 weeks ago. I paid like 450. For the price, it is unbeatable. Boot up is even faster than my thinkpad X61 which has higher configurations, maybe just because not much have been installed yet, but still very impressive. The best part about it is the HDMI output. I connect it to a 24 inch monitor without any problem. It can act like a HTPC perfectly. The noise level is also very low. The wirless connection is 300mbps. The LCD is good for watching movies, but I am really not a big fan of the mirror screen.
The only thing I don't like is the keyboard configuration. Functional keys like delete, page up, page down etc. are placed awkwardly, and since it has not keyboard backlight, I am always worry about strike the wrong key in a dark room. I recommend to use an external keyboard since I think most users will use it as a desktop replacement. As to the BIOS issue, I haven't update my bios yet, so really cannot comment on that.

Avoid HP, worst service and warranty support in existance
Laptop was received with a broken ethernet port. HP would not service my laptop due to "customer related damage" which it was obviously not. There is a reason they are dead last in all customer service polls. God forbid if you need actually service. Between dealing with people in India, which most barely speak English, and zero warranty support, take your money elsewhere. HP is the worst service experience I have ever had.

Good value for money
I've bought this refurbished laptop and until now i haven't had a single problem with it, everything works. The only thing i changed was the os, i downgraded it to XP. It was a necessity.

On 1/01/09 I called customer service (that is what they call it). I told the tech my internal lightscribe drive would not burn label's. I am not a not a novice and I went through all the steps - uninstalling the drive and reinstalling the drive, etc. I told the the tech that my external lightscribe drive was working fine so it had to be the drive. He had me duplicate all the steps I Had already done and after 1:05 he said he would send me a new drive it was under warranty got my credit card info and he put me on hold. After 10 minutes (1:15 total time) I hung up.

I called back after I cooled down and got a tech who saw what was done, bur insisted to let him take over my PC. He assured me it take only 20 minutes and I agreed. An hour and 35 minutes later I told him just take of ordering the drive (it seems the first tech did not it. Hr agreed and then after being on hold for 5 minutes he told me the system was down and I would have to call back on 11/2/09.

Both techs had bad attitudes and treated me like a dummy. I wasted two hours and 40 minutes of being insulted and talked down to!

Price can not overcome lack of service

Good product overall. Box was a bit banged up when I got it so I was apprehensive but there was no damage I could see. Love the full keyboard and the feel of it. Other PC's I've had didn't have the same good feel when stroking the keys. My only complaint is the USB ports, there's 3 of them, aren't easily usable. Very difficult to use one in particular so I don't use it. It just doesn't feel like it's to the specs it should be. Other than that very happy with it.

Nice laptop, bright screen, fast
I bought this for a client. I set it up and she bought from me. It is bright LCD. I like the keyboard with the 10-key. IT has no PCMCIA/PC Card or Expresscard slots. THE STUPID THING HAS NO GIGABIT Network. That's ridiculous. Besides that, the video cam is nice to have. As with all laptops, it needs a backlit keyboard, but Macbook Pros are one of the few that have it. This does have a modem, which she needed. The Pentium Processor is like a Core 2 Duo with a little less cache... almost the same. Comes with Vista 32-bit SP1 and 3GB. There is no latch for the case lid. They could have at least put a magnetic catch on it. I don't like the fat power connector, but it works.

The video cam software has a bug. Needed to update it and other miscellaneous software with HP updates. Not a lot of junk programs to uninstall (bloatware) -- I only removed 2 programs that sit on the Start Menu. I spent 3 hours or so updating this to SP2, latest Windows update, and getting a lot of updated HP software installed for customer. Almost all went smooth. The HP stupid BIOS updating software is stupid... it updates the BIOS but locks up. You have to manually power cycle while in Vista. I called HP on a screen that said "DO NOT TURN OFF COMPUTER" but I had a thumb's up. Eventually, they closed the case and said good luck. Call us back if it won't boot back up. It did of course. I did 2 BIOS updates with same issue. It is called InsydeFlash or Insyde BIOS Flash, and it is terrible.

Anything missing? Yeah, well, a lot of the direct access buttons. I like a button or better a dial for volume. This laptop doesn't have dedicated keys for stuff like that. You have to get up really close and read the function keys.

Overall, this is a decent machine and rates 5 stars even with my nitpicking. Its Vista rating was about 3.6 or 3.7 I think with a low for the gaming performance. It came with Norton antivirus trial and Office 2007 trial. Another downer is that you have to make your own backup DVDs, but the D drive is only about 10 GB, which is fine for a 300 GB drive.

Should be getting the upgrade to Windows 7 with this machine.

There was a rebate offered for this, I think. "Purchase an HP Pavilion notebook PC with a model number ending in "us" or "se" and receive $50 (U.S.) cash back." which is at [...] and I hope it works. Amazon doesn't list it on this page.
