Very Good Machine
This laptop turned out to a be very good buy. This is the 2nd laptop I bought in the last few months. One for my son and one for my daughter. Both love the fact that it has a small form factor, light weight, and yet it is not so small as a netbook.

But as other reviewers have pointed out, the laptop feels slugish right out of the box, until the Aero is disabled and all the crapware uninstalled.

Very nice so far!
I've had my computer for about a week now and am very satisfied with its capabilities. I've used faster computers, but not of this size and frankly I didn't buy this for the speed. My primary uses for my Acer are e-mail, surfing, IM, and the occassional Office application work (such as typing this in Word to make sure I don't embarrass myself with spelling errors!).

On to the things you may want to know if you're in the market:

Pros: size, weight, battery, fast wireless connectivity compared to my ooooold Gateway laptop, 5-in-1 card reader very handy, powers and interfaces with the external hard drive well, no problem viewing *.avi movies recorded with my Hero cam directly from the hard drive, no problems viewing videos on line so far

Cons: keyboard a bit prone to causing mis-strokes since the keys are flat with no "cup" whatsoever, no Windows system disk included (I have yet to find the time to contact Acer about this to see if I can download the OS...I'd appreciate any advice on this!), sound isn't great through the internal speakers but probably right on line with what you would expect in a computer this size, touch pad lacks defined edges (though I'm adapting to it easily).

All-in-all, I recommend this computer. I rated it at 4 stars due to some of the minor shortcomings but given the choice I would choose this again over other computers.

Netbook Killer
I received my Acer 1410 from Amazon a few weeks ago. So far I've been very pleased with it, and have no major complaints. I had shopped netbooks in the past, but the undersized screens, low resolutions, underpowered processors and small keyboards had always turned me off. The idea and price of the netbooks were right, but the execution was lacking.
The 1410 addresses all of the problems of the typical netbook while maintaining an affordable price - it's truly the best of both worlds. As soon as I saw it, I knew I'd found the machine I was looking for.

The 11.6" screen with a 1366x768 resolution make a real difference in screen landscape. 11.6" may not seem that much bigger than 8.9" or 10.1", but the difference is remarkable. No more side-scrolling and less vertical scrolling is required when viewing most web pages.

The Intel Core2 solo processor is much quicker than the Atom processors found in most netbooks. I bought an extra 2GB of RAM, for a total of 4GB of RAM. I'll install 64 bit Windows 7 soon, to take full advantage of the RAM.

The machine's footprint is a little smaller than an 8.5"x11" (A4) sheet of paper, and it's just around an inch tall at its thickest point. Its size, along with the weight of just over 3 pounds makes it truly portable.

I'm also very pleased with the keyboard. Acer's stuffed a full-sized keyboard in this tiny package. The keys are completely flat, and there's not much space between them. This means it might take a little time and practice to get used to the keyboard completely, but after a couple of weeks, I'm touch-typing just as quickly on it as I do on a normal PC keyboard.

I haven't gotten a full 6 hours of life out of the battery. I'm getting closer to 5.5 hours in my informal testing, but that's also while performing some disk-drive intensive operations or playing games that tax the system. I imagine I'd get 6 hours out of it with Wi-Fi disabled and performing less taxing operations.

I have no problem with the glossy screen, nor with the trackpad. The glossy case does attract lots of fingerprints, but that's a small price to pay for such a great little machine.

Great Netbook- Stunning performance with 64 bit Ubuntu and 4 GB Ram
This netbook ships with 32-bit Vista and 2 GB ram. It's adequate but hardly impressive. The OS installation adds a surprising amount of bloatware which take a long time to load. The extra programs nag quite a bit and require constant updates - the laptop was always slow for the first 10-15 minutes after boot due to the various updates and automatic downloads. Once I stripped these out and bumped the memory to 4 GB it got better but still wasn't any faster than my ancient P4 2.8 with XP Pro. As I use my laptop on the road and do minimal video editing I had planned to use Vista and Windows Movie Maker. Though this machine is not really designed for multimedia, I was surprised that loading any AVI or WMV files pretty much froze it.

I use Ubuntu x64 and Kino on my desktop, and out of curiosity I loaded it onto this system. All went very smoothly; the wireless worked perfectly but I did wind up installing a driver for the Ethernet NIC manually. I got Kino, ffmpeg, and Flash running without mishap, and I'm editing and trimming a 300 mb AVI outdoors in the sunshine as I write this. I have to say the performance with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 is far better than I expected and it's more than usable as an inexpensive travel system. It's not as fast as a new Macbook Pro, but it's a *lot* cheaper.

Pros:
Speed (for the price)
Screen GREAT for a netbook!
64 bit chip!
Holds 4 GB ram
Decent HDD
Keyboard
3 USB ports
Surprisingly good wireless
Whole system w/ extra memory only about 450.00

Cons:
Ships with bloated 32 bit Vista. I expect it would be faster with XP or 64 bit Windows 7 (it does have an upgrade to Win7 option)
Battery not really six hours - more like 4 - 4.5
Acer tech support only so-so.

As the de facto tech department for a number of organizations, I have used and configured a number of Asus, Samsung and Dell netbooks; I consider the this the first one that's truly usable every day. The 1410 is the one I bought.

Good PC and a Good Value
After my son and I good a fair amount of research, I decided on the Acer 1410. I've had it about a month and use it almost every day. I was using a older machine with a larger screen, but have gotten used to the smaller screen, and have no concerns with it. I like the full size keyboard, reducing the fat-fingering when I type. I sometimes brush the touchpad and move the curser to an unwanted area, a little annoying if you don't catch it right away, and over-type your text. Getting along without a drive system hasn't been a problem so far, I downloaded a printer driver from the printer website and am able to print remotely. The battery lasts long enough for me, about 4+ hours with the Internet connection always on. Unit is small enough to be very portable, light and easy to use on a desk, in a chair, on a lap, even lying in bed. The chipset seems fast enough as well, claiming to be faster than the Adam processor in most mini's. I do get some flicker when I watch HULU but it's not really a concern, I didn't buy it for that. I've heard using Google Chrome helps this. The unit comes with some trial softwar, most of which I deleted. I does include trial of McAfee and Office, 30 or 60 day trials on these. I am more than satisfied with this PC, using it for Internet surfing mostly, casual computing I suppose. Check out the Acer website as I heard a newer version is already in production, although it's also more expensive.
